The First Rain in Bandra

Ananya Deshmukh stood by the window of the small one-bedroom flat in Bandra West, watching the monsoon hammer the street below. The rain had started just after she finished her shift at the call centre in Andheri. Her roommate, Shruti, was visiting her parents in Pune for the weekend, so the flat was empty except for the sound of water hitting the tin awning outside. Ananya was twenty-three. She had finished her B.Com last year and taken the first job that paid enough to send money home to Nashik every month. Her mother still called every other night to ask when she would come back and “settle.” Settling, in her mother’s language, meant marriage. Ananya had never even held a boy’s hand properly.

She had met Kabir at the office canteen two months earlier. He worked on the same floor, in the technical support team. He was twenty-six, from Indore, and spoke with the same soft Marathi accent she had grown up hearing, only cleaner. He always brought his own tiffin and shared the extra rotis when he saw her eating the canteen idli. One evening he had walked her to the station because the last local was delayed. They stood under the same umbrella. His shoulder had brushed hers every time a scooter splashed past. She had not slept properly that night.

He messaged her on WhatsApp the next day. Nothing dramatic. Just a photo of the rain outside his window and the line, “Your station must be worse.” She replied. Then they started talking every night after ten, when the flat was quiet and her mother had already called. He never pushed. He asked about her day, about the customer who had shouted at her for twenty minutes because the internet was down, about the new serial her mother was watching. Sometimes he sent voice notes. His voice was low and unhurried. She listened to them twice.

Tonight he had said, “Come over. Shruti is gone, no? I’ll make chai. Nothing else.” She had stared at the message for almost an hour. Then she had typed, “Okay. But only chai.”

Now she was here. The flat was on the second floor of an old building near the Bandra station. The paint on the stairs was peeling. Inside, Kabir’s room smelled of wet clothes and the faint sweetness of the incense stick he had lit near the small photo of Sai Baba. He had changed into a plain white kurta and track pants. His hair was still damp from the rain.

“Sit,” he said, pointing to the single chair. He was already boiling milk on the small stove in the corner. Ananya sat. Her dupatta kept slipping. She adjusted it three times. Her heart was beating so hard she could feel it in her throat.

They drank the chai in silence for a while. The rain was louder here. Every few minutes a train passed and the whole building shook slightly. Kabir put his cup down and looked at her.

“You can go if you want,” he said. “I won’t mind.”

“I don’t want to go,” she answered. Her voice came out smaller than she expected.

He stood up, took the cups, and put them in the sink. When he turned back, he was closer. He reached out and touched the edge of her dupatta where it had fallen off her shoulder. His fingers were warm. He didn’t pull it away. He just held the cloth between his thumb and finger.

“Ananya,” he said. “Tell me to stop and I will stop.”

She shook her head once. That was all.

He leaned down and kissed her. It was not the kind of kiss she had imagined from movies. His mouth was soft at first, almost careful. She kept her lips closed for a few seconds because she did not know what else to do. Then she opened them a little. His tongue touched hers and she made a small sound in her throat. He tasted like the chai they had just finished. His hand moved from the dupatta to the back of her neck. His thumb stroked the skin just under her ear. She felt her whole body go loose and tight at the same time.

When he pulled back, both of them were breathing harder. Ananya’s hands were still in her lap. She had not touched him yet.

“Come here,” he said, and sat on the edge of the single bed. She stood and walked the two steps. He pulled her gently so she was standing between his knees. His hands settled on her waist, over the cotton of her kurti. He looked up at her face.

“I want to see you,” he said. “Only if you want.”

She nodded. Her fingers were clumsy when she reached for the buttons at her throat. He helped her. The kurti came off. Underneath she was wearing a simple bra, pale blue, nothing fancy. She had bought it from a street stall near Dadar because the one she owned had started to fray. Kabir looked at her for a long moment. Then he leaned forward and pressed his mouth to the skin just above the bra. Ananya’s hands went to his hair without her deciding to put them there. His hair was thick and still a little damp. She held on.

He unhooked the bra. It fell. Her breasts were not large. The nipples were dark and already tight. When his mouth closed over one, she gasped. The sound was loud in the small room. He sucked gently at first, then harder, his tongue moving in slow circles. Ananya’s knees bent. She would have fallen if his hands had not been holding her hips. He switched to the other breast. One of his hands slid down and cupped her through the salwar. Even through the cloth she could feel the heat of his palm.

“Kabir,” she said. It came out like a question.

He stopped and looked up. “Too much?”

“No. Just… I have never…”

“I know,” he said. His voice was steady. “We go slow. You tell me everything. What feels good. What doesn’t.”

He stood up and pulled his kurta over his head. His chest was lean, the skin a shade darker than hers. There was a thin line of hair running down from his navel. Ananya stared. She had never seen a man without a shirt this close. He took her hand and placed it on his chest. His heart was beating almost as fast as hers.

They lay down together. The bed was narrow. Kabir’s body was warm all along her side. He kissed her again, longer this time, while his hand moved over her stomach, her ribs, the soft skin under her breasts. When his fingers reached the waistband of her salwar, he paused.

“Can I?”

“Yes.”

He pushed the salwar and her panties down together. Ananya lifted her hips to help. The air in the room felt cool on her bare skin. She was wet. She could feel it. Kabir’s hand slid between her legs. His fingers parted her gently. She jerked when he touched the small swollen place at the top.

“Here?” he asked.

“Yes. There.”

He rubbed in small circles, light at first, then a little firmer when she started moving against his hand. Ananya turned her face into his shoulder. She had touched herself a few times in the bathroom at home, quickly, with the door locked, but it had never felt like this. His fingers were thicker. He knew where to press. One finger slid lower and pushed inside her. She was tight. The stretch made her breath catch.

“Relax,” he said against her ear. “Breathe.”

She tried. The finger moved slowly in and out. A second finger joined it. The feeling was strange and good at the same time. Her hips started to rock without her telling them to. Kabir’s thumb stayed on her clit. The pressure built low in her stomach. She could hear the wet sound his fingers made. It embarrassed her and made her wetter.

“I’m going to…” she whispered.

“Let it come.”

It hit her hard. Her whole body tightened. She grabbed his arm and held on while the feeling rolled through her in waves. When it faded she was shaking. Kabir kissed her forehead and kept his fingers inside her until the last small pulses stopped.

He pulled his hand away. Ananya looked down and saw his fingers shining. He brought them to his mouth and licked them clean while she watched. Then he stood up and pushed his track pants down. His cock was hard, darker than the rest of him, curved slightly upward. Ananya had never seen one in real life. She stared.

“Touch it if you want,” he said.

She reached out. The skin was hotter than she expected and smoother. When she wrapped her fingers around it, Kabir made a low sound. She moved her hand the way she had seen in the few videos she had watched on her phone with the volume off. He let her for a minute, then gently moved her hand away.

“If you keep doing that I won’t last,” he said. “I want to be inside you. Only if you still want.”

Ananya nodded. Her mouth was dry. “Will it hurt?”

“A little. At the start. I’ll go slow. You stop me anytime.”

He reached into the small drawer beside the bed and took out a condom. She watched him roll it on. Then he lay down beside her again and pulled her on top of him so she was straddling his hips. His cock rested against her stomach.

“Like this,” he said. “You control it. Go down when you are ready.”

Ananya lifted herself. She reached between them and held him. The head pressed against her opening. She was still wet from earlier. She lowered herself an inch. The stretch was sharp. She stopped, breathing through her mouth. Kabir’s hands stayed on her thighs, not pushing.

“Okay?” he asked.

“Wait.”

She stayed there, getting used to the feeling of him just inside her. After a few seconds the sting lessened. She sank lower. Another inch. Then another. When he was halfway in she had to stop again. It felt too full. Kabir’s jaw was tight. He was holding still.

“Ananya. Look at me.”

She did. His eyes were dark. He reached up and touched her face.

“You’re doing so well,” he said. “Take your time.”

She pushed down the rest of the way. The last bit made her gasp. He was all the way inside. She could feel him deep, stretching her in a way nothing else ever had. For a moment neither of them moved. The rain was still falling. A train passed. Ananya’s thighs were trembling.

“Move when you want,” Kabir said. His voice was rough.

She lifted herself slowly and sank back down. The second time was easier. By the fourth stroke the pain had turned into something else, a deep ache that felt good when she moved the right way. Kabir’s hands slid up to her breasts. He pinched her nipples lightly. Ananya moaned. The sound surprised her. She started moving faster, finding a rhythm. Every time she came down she felt him hit a place inside that made her clench.

Kabir sat up suddenly, still inside her, and wrapped his arms around her back. The new angle made him go deeper. Ananya cried out. He kissed her, swallowing the sound, while his hips thrust up to meet her. One of his hands slipped between them and found her clit again. He rubbed in time with their movements. Ananya’s second orgasm came quicker than the first. She buried her face in his neck and shook while he kept moving inside her, slower now, letting her ride it out.

When she could breathe again, Kabir turned them so she was on her back. He stayed inside her. He pulled almost all the way out and pushed back in, watching her face. Ananya’s legs came up around his waist without her thinking about it. He fucked her in long, steady strokes. The bed creaked. The headboard tapped the wall in a soft rhythm. Ananya could hear the wet sound of their bodies every time he pushed in. She liked the sound. She liked the way his stomach pressed against hers, the way his breath hit her cheek.

“Harder,” she said. The word came out before she could stop it.

Kabir’s hips snapped forward. The next thrust was deeper. Ananya’s back arched. He did it again. And again. She held onto his shoulders. Her nails dug in. He didn’t seem to mind. He kept one hand between them, fingers working her clit while he fucked her. Ananya felt another wave building. This one was slower, heavier. When it broke she sobbed his name. Kabir’s rhythm faltered. He pushed in deep and stayed there, his whole body shaking as he came. She could feel the pulse of him inside the condom.

They stayed like that for a long time. Kabir’s weight was heavy on her but she didn’t want him to move. The rain had become lighter. Outside, someone was shouting for a taxi. Kabir lifted his head and kissed her, slow and soft.

“You okay?” he asked.

Ananya nodded. Her throat felt tight. She was sore already, a deep ache between her legs, but it was not bad. She felt different. Not broken. Just… open.

Kabir pulled out carefully. He tied the condom and dropped it in the small bin. Then he lay back down and pulled the thin sheet over both of them. Ananya turned onto her side so her back was against his chest. His arm came around her waist. His hand rested on her stomach, just above the place that still felt stretched.

“Stay tonight,” he said. “I’ll make breakfast in the morning. Real breakfast. Not just chai.”

Ananya closed her eyes. Her mother’s voice was somewhere in the back of her head, talking about duty and what people would say. She pushed the voice away. The rain was still falling. Kabir’s heartbeat was steady against her back. She was twenty-three years old and she was no longer a virgin. The thought did not scare her as much as she had expected.

“Okay,” she said. “I’ll stay.”

They lay there while the trains kept passing and the city kept moving outside the window. Ananya’s hand found Kabir’s on her stomach and held it. Neither of them spoke again for a long time. There would be time for talking later. Right now the only thing that mattered was the warmth of his body against hers and the slow, steady sound of the rain.
